and the recipient of the 2009/2010 Maternity Care Excellence Award™ from HealthGrades,
the nation’s leading independent healthcare ratings organization. Mercy Hospital
also received HealthGrades 2009/2010 Women’s Health Excellence Award TM. Mercy is
one of only 15 hospitals in the nation to receive both designations this year. Wide
gaps in quality outcomes for maternity care persist, according to a new study released
today by HealthGrades. The Sixth Annual HealthGrades Women’s Health in American

There are about 6 million pregnancies every year in the United States, according
to the American Pregnancy Association. Although the birth of a child is a joyous
time for most, some women experience mood swings or depression following delivery.

Rolando J. De Leon MD, chairman of Mercy Hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology
department, says it is important for new mothers to be seen six to eight weeks after
delivery for a postpartum exam. “It’s important to sit down and talk with the mom
and see how she is doing and how she is dealing with the new baby,” he says.
